The global seafood market has undergone a fundamental and permanent shift. Supermarket chains in Germany, France, and the UK now require documented sustainability credentials as a baseline supplier qualification not a premium add on. Hotel procurement departments at international chains operating across the Gulf require it. Restaurant buyers with premium clientele require it. For Indonesian exporters and their international partners, understanding and meeting these standards is now a prerequisite to accessing the most valuable and highest-margin markets.
The Three Major Certification Frameworks
MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) is the gold standard for wild-caught seafood globally. An MSC certificate tells buyers that an independent assessment has confirmed the fishery meets science-based standards covering sustainable fish stock levels, minimized environmental impact on non target species and habitats, and effective fisheries management systems. Indonesian tuna, certain reef fish, and squid fisheries are actively engaged in MSC assessment or formal pre-assessment programs, with certification expected to expand significantly over the coming years.
ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) is the equivalent framework for farmed seafood shrimp, grouper, tilapia, milkfish, and other cultured species. ASC certification evaluates water quality management, chemical and antibiotic inputs, worker welfare, and the impact of the farm on surrounding wild ecosystems. Several Indonesian vannamei shrimp farms in Java and Sulawesi are now ASC certified, and the number is growing as farmers recognize the market access benefits.
BAP (Best Aquaculture Practices), administered by the Global Seafood Alliance, operates a tiered star rating system from one to four stars, covering farms, hatcheries, feed mills, and processing plants in a single integrated chain-of custody framework. BAP 4-star certification covering the complete supply chain from feed to export is increasingly required by US and European retail buyers and is gaining traction in Gulf market procurement specifications.
Indonesia's Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has implemented an increasingly rigorous domestic compliance framework that directly supports exporters' ability to obtain and maintain international certifications. Key components include a mandatory Catch Documentation Scheme (CDS) for tuna and other priority species mandatory VMS (Vessel Monitoring System) for all commercial fishing vessels above a certain tonnage size limits and seasonal closures for commercially significant species and a Port State Measures Agreement (PSMA) implementation program to prevent illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) catch from entering the supply chain.
Does the exporter hold active MSC, ASC, or BAP certificates or can they demonstrate that their direct suppliers hold these certifications with a valid chain-of-custody?
Can the exporter provide full traceability documentation from the point of harvest or farm to the export container?
Are all fishing vessels supplying the exporter registered and operating legally under Indonesian MMAF regulations?
Has the processing facility undergone any third-party social audits covering labor standards, working conditions, and wage compliance?
Can the exporter confirm no use of banned substances including chloramphenicol, nitrofurans, and malachite green through independent laboratory testing?
